Our aim is to make boarding flexible and fun! Flexible in that we try to tailor our provision to the needs of the parent and the child and fun in that we believe it should be an enjoyable experience from which the child can develop independence and become more self-sufficient. At The Prebendal we cater for all types of boarding; full, weekly and flexi or one-night sleepovers. After school, there is a full programme of activities and after supper there is a supervised prep session and practice time for those who learn instruments.
Boarders are accommodated in well-appointed dormitories according to age group and we try to create a homely atmosphere by encouraging the children to bring photographs, posters and their own toys from home. Health, personal hygiene and clothes are looked after by our team of medically trained matrons. There is always a matron on duty, day and night, and in the evenings she is supported by a member of the residential staff. The general oversight of the boarding and the welfare of the pupils lies with the House Master under the guidance of the Head Master.
Although some pupils start as boarders, many day pupils become boarders during their time at the school. This is an essential step for those who are moving on to Public Schools where they will have to board but many who are intending to move on as day pupils also benefit from the rewarding experience.
What time do the children go to bed?
Years 3 and 4 boarders go to bed at 8:30pm, Years 5 and 6 at 8:45pm, Year 7 at 9pm and Year 8 at 9:10pm. In the second half of the Summer Term, when the light lasts longer, the boarders go to bed a little later.
When do they do their homework?
Homework, or as we call it Prep, is completed after supper from 7:30pm to 8pm. Music practice takes place after supper and before Prep, from 6:40pm to 7:20pm. Choristers and Year 8 pupils who are preparing for scholarships may go on until 8:20pm.
Who looks after the children?
The boarding is run by Mr Ian Richardson the House Master, who lives on site with his wife and young daughter. He has a team of 'resident' staff, all of whom have been House Masters in the past. There are three Matrons who work on rotation and the Gap students also assist with the boarding.
