The Prebendal School seeks to appoint an exceptional Head of Music to lead our vibrant and highly regarded Music Department from September 2026.

Music is woven into the fabric of Prebendal life. With roots as a cathedral song school and a long-standing reputation for musical excellence, this is a rare opportunity for a talented and ambitious musician to shape and strengthen music within one of the country’s most distinctive preparatory schools.

We are looking for an inspiring teacher and leader who combines outstanding musicianship with warmth, vision and the ability to foster a lifelong love of music in children aged 3–13.

About The Prebendal School

Founded in 1497 and set within the historic Cathedral Close in the heart of Chichester, The Prebendal School is the oldest school in Sussex. Today we are a thriving co-educational day and boarding preparatory school for pupils aged 3–13.

Our close relationship with Chichester Cathedral shapes our identity and enriches school life. Prebendal offers small classes, strong pastoral care and exceptional co-curricular opportunities within a supportive and ambitious community.

Music holds a central place in our culture. Over 95% of pupils receive individual instrumental tuition, many study multiple instruments, and a significant proportion of leavers are awarded music scholarships to leading senior schools each year.

Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent.

Salary: Depending on experience

Start Date: Sep 2026

The Head of Music will lead a thriving and ambitious department at the heart of school life.

You will:

  • Lead and develop the school’s musical vision
  • Direct choirs, orchestras and ensembles across the age range
  • Teach music from Nursery to Year 8
  • Prepare pupils for concerts, festivals and music scholarships
  • Manage and support a team of visiting instrumental teachers
  • Work collaboratively with the Cathedral’s music team
  • Oversee concerts, assemblies and major musical events
  • A high level of keyboard competence, including confident sight-reading, is essential.

This role requires energy, visibility and a genuine enthusiasm for contributing to the wider life of a busy day and boarding prep school.

We are looking for someone who has:

·Experience of leading subject area and initiatives

·Relevant Degree Level Educated

·An innovative, imaginative approach to teaching and learning

·Proven ability to relate well to and communicate effectively with pupils, staff and parents

·A collegiate working style with the ability both to lead the Department and to work as part of a team.

·An understanding and commitment to Prebendal aims and values

·An eye for detail and an ability to ensure that work is undertaken with accuracy.

·Proactive with an ability to work both independently and as part of a team and to stay calm and positive under pressure in a busy office environment.

·A professional outlook, handling confidential information with discretion and tact.
