Science Week at Prebendal!
Investigation was the key word for today with the whole school participating in science activities. Early Years pupils were assisted by some of our seasoned scientists from Year 8 in their investigations into the science of bubbles and light absorption. Year 2 investigated speed by constructing table top marble runs. Ice was the theme for Year 3, where thermometers were used to investigate mixing ice and salt. Sticks and jelly beans were the used to test out different igloo designs. Year 4 were busy investigating sound, modelling sound waves and discovering how electrical resistance can be used to vary the pitch of sound. The morning was finished off with a very long string telephone. Year 5 and 6 investigated water, not quite believing that they could make a cloud in a beaker. Their morning was completed by comparing different methods of filtering dirty water. Year 7 and Year 8 were considering the environment with an experiment to make bioplastic from potato starch, we had some interesting results and will be refining our technique later in the year, as is good scientific practice.
Several of our activities have come from working in partnership with the Royal Academy of Engineers to develop our STEM program.
